hope’s fish and chips - livonia, MI

the other day i went to hope’s fish and chips for dinner. they serve fish and chips, obviously. if you don’t want standard fish and chips, there are a wide variety of other things ending with “and chips” on the menu. this includes, but is not limited to: jumbo butterfly shrimp and chips, frog legs and chips, deviled crabcakes and chips, popcorn shrimp and chips, krabby cakes and chips, lake perch and chips, smelt and chips, fried chicken and chips, chicken strips and fish, chips and chips, chips, chips, chips….or a homemade pasty!

the exterior

this place is really old. it opened in 1939, and still operates like it is 1939. they don’t take credit cards, only cash, so hit up the ATM or you will be fishless. the dark wood paneling and dusty stuffed fish on the walls imply that they also have not redecorated since then. but this is a good thing! the food is quality and the people are nice, just like 1939.

they bring you a basket of rolls, butter, and a lot of tartar sauce.

all dinners are served with a choice of baked potato or french fries. i ordered the broiled lemon pepper cod with a baked potato. a few minutes later a lady came over to tell me they ran out of baked potatoes, so i had no choice but to have french fries. :-(

eventually my cod came!! it had a pile of crinkle cut fries, and a blob of coleslaw. hope’s has decent coleslaw! it is edible unlike the coleslaw at ..some other establishments. they brought out malt vinegar for the french fries. it did not even occur to me that people ate vinegar on french fries until i tasted it, and remembered eating big cups of soggy vinegared fries at the fair.

codarific!

chris got one of the specials; shrimp, fish, and chips:

fish, shrimp and chips

we ate until we could eat no more. we then realized we were the last people there and hurried out. if you are looking for good fish and chips, go to hope’s, not some scuzzy diner with fish and chips as their friday dinner special. i promise you will not be disappointed.

in cod we trust!!
