zingerman’s deli - ann arbor, MI (for real this time!!)
Posted on July 3rd, 2008 in ann arbor, zingerman's, michigan
on sunday me and chris went to zingerman’s and FINALLY ATE THERE!! it was the only time in my life i have ever spent 12 dollars on a sandwich. it was also probably the only time in my life where a sandwich was worth 12 dollars. there were huge crowds of people gathered into the little tiny room that is zingerman’s deli. we waited in a line that was more of a demanding mob than it was a line. to our left was a giant glass case full of cheese and even more cheese stacked on top of it. to our right were huge shelves full of expensive, handmade bread.
we reached the front of the mob and ordered lunch. we had to pay for it separately from where we ordered it. we waited in another mob of people pushing around trying to pay for bags of bread and bottles of fancy olive oil. after we paid, we waited outside at a table in the sun. finally a guy came outside with a tray. he yelled “SANDWICHES FOR LIZZ, I HAVE SANDWICHES FOR LIZZ” i am lizz so he gave them to us!
our zingerman’s sandwiches were finally here! finally the time had come! our GLORIOUS #51 bob and roz’s fiesta laid before our eyes. grilled amish chicken breast, wisconsin muenster cheese, roasted red pepper sauce, new mexico green chiles, lettuce, and tomato, all piled onto grilled rye bread with a side of sour cream. it was sour cream like i never imagined could exist. it was actually cream that was sour, not a big glob of nasty processed jiggly white stuff from a plastic tub. our sandwiches came with a pickle. there was a choice of “old” pickles or “new” pickles. the old pickle was a garlic cured pickle and the “new” pickle was a cucumbery, crunchy dill pickle. we got old pickles. we also got a cup of matzo ball soup, and an iced tea. i took full advantage of our iced tea by going back and refilling it repeatedly with a different kind each time. throughout the course of 20 minutes we got to drink red roobios mint iced tea, green citrus iced tea, and black iced tea. i am not sure if i was supposed to do this, but it was really good so i don’t know that i care one way or another.
my pickle, which is hidden by my giant claw in the above photo, was crunchy, garlicky, and delicious like you might imagine. the broth in our matzo ball soup was made from real amish chicken. after we ate, we wandered around in zingerman’s next door (literally next door), which is for coffee, cakes, chocolate, gelato, and more. i drooled over fancy truffles and seitenbacher strawberry alligators from germany. a nice lady gave me a gelato sample in a tiny spoon.
zingerman’s next door
zingerman’s is any foodies dream come true. even if you are not a foodie you will think you have died and gone to heaven, except with a lot less angels and a lot more imported cheese.
