bananamango horror story

the other day at meijer i was looking at the tropical produce. i picked up a genetically altered mango called a “banana mango.” it promised to be “the mango that is always ready to eat”…whatever that means. it also claimed to be a “drippy elbow mango, so delicious the juice runs down your elbows!”

i brought one home with me, and a couple days later i decided to eat it. i will be the first to admit that i can’t cut fruits and vegetables for crap. i can’t slice mangoes into perfect little cubes, or any kind of shape at all. usually i end up hacking at them with a knife until somewhat mangled, but edible. i hacked the banana mango into edible pieces. it was not very juicy at all and my elbows stayed rather dry. i tasted it. it didn’t taste like a banana, it didn’t taste like a mango, and it definitely didn’t taste like a banana mango. actually, it tasted similar to a bowl of creamed corn.

i tried to find out more about the banana mango, but there isn’t any information about it. anywhere. even the manufacturers website does not include the banana mango in the list of products it distributes. i wouldn’t admit to making a mango that tastes like creamed corn, either.

  1. LOL! That sounds like a really scary experience. I think your face says it all, really! I think I will just stick with regular bananas.

  5. A banana mango? What in the world…LOL I wouldn’t trust any genetically altered produce after that experience. (Especially if it tasted like creamed corn!)

  6. Wow, I have never heard of one so I obviously have never tasted one and thanks to your wonderful review, I will stay away from them as I like my fruits to taste like fruits and not like veggies aka creamed corn!

  7. Priceless expression! :) but i just ate one of these dreaded “banangos” and my experience was considerably different! i ran my knife from top to bottom on both sides and peeled the “skin” off the outside. the interior looked like a very ripe mango… but tasted like a citrusy, creamy, mango… i tasted NO corn, although i detected that hint of creaminess you talked about. i nearly had to take a shower after eating it. i had to chow down over the sink and even then the juice made it all the way to my elbows… i say you try it again! maybe you just had a bad one…

  8. i had very high hopes for the bananamango and was very sad when it tasted like creamed corn :( maybe mine was not ripe, or..had something wrong with it.. maybe i’ll try another one again someday.
